Both my father and I earned our Eagle, as did my father-in-law. My father earned his in 1958 while serving as an Air Explorer Squadron Leader in Virginia Beach, VA. He was 35 years old at the time. I received the following response from Bill Sills, the Compuserve Scouting forum resident historian, Sea Scout leader and advocate, and keeper of the Sea/Air Scout faith. His answer to me was: "Adults could earn Boy Scout, Air Scout, Sea Scout, Rover and Explorer ranks until 1965. The adult rank advancements were not encouraged after 1949. Your Dad's rank achievements were perfectly legal and in accordance with BSA policy at the time. Today, the Eagle Scout award "cut-off" is age 18 and that of the Quartermaster Award for Sea Explorers is 21." My father was a Life scout before World War 2 interrupted his scouting career. Apparently, according to Bill Sill, his previous rank was not a factor in his being able to continue on the Eagle Trail.
