Entirely too often, the adults in a troop or pack are ashamed or afraid of fund raising and that is a killer. If you have a used car salesman who is part of your troop family, see if that person will be the sales manager for the operation. If the Scouts don't believe that fund raising is fun, it won't be. But if they think it is fun and come to the troop meeting and say "I sold another $200 worth" and get a cheer from the troop, they you will have a great event. 2) Select a product which the Scouts enjoy and like to sell. As a Scout, we sold easter eggs and I hated them. As a Scoutmaster, my troop sold Xmas trees and the troop liked that. Later, as an Asst. SM, the troop sold Fire Extinguishers, safety lights and other such things. That worked well. Ask your PLC and your younger Scouts. Don't get them made fun of at school for what they are selling. 3) Make the product profitable. Your margin should be 50% or higher (That means for every $2.00 you sell, you net $1.00 or more.) The greatest product we ever sold was light sticks. We bought them for $.77 and sold them for $2.00. Remember that the cost of unsold product gets eaten by you, but if the margins are high enough, that really doesn't matter. People will pay a bit extra because it is for the Scouts. Let them pay extra. 4) Price the product right. You should decide what the average sale should be, but don't let the customers off easy. If in your neighborhood, the average sale should be $10.00, be sure that the Scouts push for the ten dollar or higher sale. 5) Train the Scouts and make it fun. There is a Salesmanship Merit Badge and we made Salesmanship the monthly theme the month of our fund raiser. One year, eleven of our Scouts earned it. Let them role play salesmanship during troop meetings. Remember, if we teach a Scout to be a good salesman, it is a skill he can use all his life. 6) Give the Scouts a solid incentive to sell, particularly if the selling is door-to-door. DON'T CAP THE INCENTIVE. There is a great temptation to try to get every Scout to sell a little and to hold back the big salesman. Don't do that. In successful unit sales I have seen, about 5 Scouts sell about 80% of the total material and 1 Scout sells close to 50%. Don't discourage that Scout. Give him an incentive to keep selling and selling and selling, because he will. Expect your parents to fight this. It is very common that your youngest Scouts are your best salesmen. And last year's great salesman does nothing this year. And to some extent, this is because people will buy from the little Scouts who are cute and blow off your older Scouts. 7) Value the time of your parents and your time. If it takes one hour of parent time to raise $1 or even $10, something is very wrong. Done right, the fund raising event can be a fun, spirit raising experience. Remember, that we take boys out into the freezing cold, make them live in tents, eat burned food, walk all over the place, look for impossible to find trees and animals and they think it is great! Because they are told that it is great! If fund raising is fun for the adults, it will be fun for the boys. Have a great time. We have some very faithful families and more who are apathetic about > supporting the program. Charlie, Let's start with the philosophy for fundraising (money earning). In our troop, we believe participation in Scouting is costly, but we want as many boys (and adults) as want to be able to participate. To that end, we strive to shift the cost of Scouting from individual payment to fundraising as much as possible. But fundraising should not be so prevalent in Troop operations that it detracts from the program. We don't want boys going around saying all they do in the Troop is work on fundraising. So our efforts go into coming up with high yield fundraising activities. Our primary fundraiser is a Christmas Wreath sale conducted door-to-door on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. In that one-day fundraiser alone, we net about $4000 (Troop of 40 boys). As far as getting Scouts to participate, that one's easy (to us, anyway). We run two really fun activities each year -- winter camping in the New Hampshire White Mountains with a ski trip, and a special Camporee in the Spring (lately, the Six Flags Camporee in New Jersey). To be eligible to attend these activities, Scouts must participate in the fundraiser at a minimum level (e.g., sell at least two dozen wreaths). -- Robert Caron Troop Committee Secretary, Northborough Troop 101 Brotherhood, Chippanyonk Lodge #59, OA Knox Trail Council #244, BSA Massachusetts From <@tcuavm.is.tcu.edu:owner-scouts-l@TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU> Wed Dec 17 13:03:43 1997 Return-Path: <@tcuavm.is.tcu.edu:owner-scouts-l@TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU> Received: from tcuavm.is.tcu.edu (TCUAVM.IS.TCU.EDU [138.237.128.148]) by cap1.CapAccess.org (8.6.12/8.6.10) with SMTP id NAA23465; Wed, 17 Dec 1997 13:03:43 -0500 Received: from TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU by tcuavm.is.tcu.edu (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) with BSMTP id 2482; Wed, 17 Dec 97 11:56:43 CDT Received: from TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU (NJE origin LISTSERV@TCUBVM) by TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU (LMail V1.2a/1.8a) with BSMTP id 3582; Wed, 17 Dec 1997 11:57:07 -0500 Received: from TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU by TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU (LISTSERV release 1.8b) with NJE id 3576 for SCOUTS-L@TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU; Wed, 17 Dec 1997 11:56:11 -0500 Received: from TCUBVM (NJE origin SMTP@TCUBVM) by TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU (LMail V1.2a/1.8a) with BSMTP id 3575; Wed, 17 Dec 1997 11:56:10 -0500 Received: from mail.kitsap.lib.wa.us by tcubvm.is.tcu.edu (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) with TCP; Wed, 17 Dec 97 11:55:44 CDT Received: from linknet.kitsap.lib.wa.us (msalvett@linknet.kitsap.lib.wa.us [198.187.135.22]) by mail.kitsap.lib.wa.us (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id LAA30949; Wed, 17 Dec 1997 11:01:09 -0800 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Message-ID: Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 09:47:06 -0800 Reply-To: Michael Salvetti Sender: Scouts-L Youth Group List From: Michael Salvetti Subject: Re: Fund Raisers ..long sorry.. What I do is explain to them what they will be doing and how much we will be making. That gets them excited. My experance with fund raisers is to have a lest two a year maybe three buts thats pushing it. I plan them to make big money. I also let the scouts that its there fundraiser not the committee or the parents and they are going to be working it with the parents watching to see if everything is going ok. The meeting after the fundraiser I let the scouts know how much they made and ask them. Do they what to do it again next years? Than I ask them for there comments on how to improve it for next year and any other ideas? This method works and really gets them involved more in raising money for troop. > and what other fund raising ideas have been most successful for your > troop. One idea you might want to try is x-mas recycling. It's easy and the scouts love doing it. You can make some big bucks. Here's how to do it. Find a good location where your troop is visiable to the puplic like a store parking lot on a main road. Put in your local newspaper where you are going to be and the amout you want for each tree (* ask $3.00 per tree *). Then the public will drop them off. You will need to haul the trees off to dispose of them yourself. Another way is to contact a local business that has a large chipper that can handle trees and find out if they would like to donate their services and equipment to chip the trees and they keep the chips. If they say yes, they can do it right at your location. You can also expand this and make more money by going out and getting the x-mas trees yourself. This does involue adults with pick-ups, trucks, or trailers that can haul trees. Have the scouts go door to door. They collect the money and get the tree. Then bring back the trees to your loction. If you do decide to do this the do's and don'ts are: don't 1. Don't go door to door and get money ;first and come back later for the tree. I have heard of groups doing this and they don't come back for trees. 2. Don't advertise that you are going to neighorhoods. People will expect you in their neighorhoods and you may never show. There can be bad feelings on how you do this, so don't advertise. 3. Don't advertise to let the public know you will pick up their tree by them calling a phone number and you going out to collect. It dosen't work. PERIOD. do 1. Do it on Saturday and Sunday, the weekend after x-mas and maybe the next weekend alsodepands on when x-mas and new years falls on. 2. Get the scouts involved. 3. Have fun. If your area has never done x-mas tree recycling, it will take a while for the public to catch on. I have been involved with one cub pack and a troop in oregon and they did fantastic. I moved to silverdale, wa. and I started the troop in doing this which was the first time for the troop, we made over $300.00 the first time. It gets better every year.
