There is no one to pray to but you. The stars of the heavens are yours, and yours are the grasses of the earth, and the depths of the seas. You are older than all need, older than all pain and prayer. Great God, fill us with light. Give us strength to understand and eyes to see. Teach us to walk the soft earth as relatives to all that live. Help us, for without you we are nothing. Amen. LITANY OF THANKSGIVING L. For all good gifts, P. We give you thanks, O God. L. For the earth that is our home, P. We give you thanks, O God. L. For opportunities to study and learn, P. We give you thanks, O God. L. For play and exercise, P. We give you thanks, O God. L. For the work we do together, P. We give you thanks, O God. L. For service by which we care for others, P. We give you thanks, O God. L. Read Luke 10:29-37 2. Ask the boys what they think the story means. Note that, for the Jews, the Samaritan was "scum." Relate the Christian message to the Boy Scout laws. 3. Divide the boys into groups of 3-4. Ask them to retell the story dramatically, using modern language, images, and characters. Have them act out their story in front of the whole group. 4. Discuss what has happened, if you think it helpful. 5. Conclude with extemporaneous prayer or: O God, you created all people in your image. We thank you for the astonishing variety of people in the world. Enrich our lives by ever-widening circles of friendship, and show us your presence in those who differ most from us. Help us to be helpful to all people. Give us courage to reach out to others -- especially those who are different. Keep us friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, and brave. Amen. A SCOUT SERVICE WITH FOCUS ON CARE FOR GOD'S EARTH 1. In advance, prepare slips of paper with the scripture readings noted in #3 (these will be distributed to the groups). 2. At the time of the service, read Genesis 1:1-2:3. 3. Divide the boys and adults (except for the leaders of the service) into 8 groups as follows. Groups may be combined, if necessary: a. light and darkness (Genesis 1:3-5) b. sky (Genesis 1:6-8) c. earth and water (Genesis 1:9-10) d. vegetation (Genesis 1:11-13) e. sun, moon, stars and planets (Genesis 1:14-19) f. creatures of the sea and the air (Genesis 1:20-23) g. land-dwelling creatures (Genesis 1:24-25) h. human beings (Genesis 1:26-31) 4. Give each group its scripture reading and the instruction that they are to work together to (a) find something that best represents their subject (e.g., earth and water, vegetation) and (b) discuss how they can be good stewards of that subject. Encourage creativity. For example, the "sky" group could capture smoke from the campfire in a plastic bag and discuss air pollution. 5. Allow the groups 10 minutes or so. Gather them back, and then reread the lesson from Genesis 1:1-2:3, this time with each group in succession (a) reading its portion of the lesson; (b) presenting that which represents their subject; and (c) stating how they can be good stewards of that part of God's creation. The worship leader should read those portions of the text not covered by the groups. Following each group's presentation, the leader may say: "God, you have given us responsibility for ________" (name the subject of the group); to which the rest respond, "Help us to be good stewards." 6. Conclude with the singing or the reading of the hymn "This Is My Father's World." ------------------------------------------------------------------ "NAUMS - The Scouting Ministry" Edward W.
