I've heard very good things from those who attended SP....especially about the scenery. I can tell you a little about some of our favorite activities at Bartle (which I think has an amazing program)! Perhaps I could highlight some of the activities here but if you would like for me to mail you a copy of the program section of the leader's handbook, give me your snailmail address and I'll be happy to send it. In addition to offering 35 merit badges including waterskiing, motorboating, small boat sailing, astronomy and oceanography (yep), a full compliment of what are called "ranger outposts" are offered. You can do these with a patrol, a troop or just an "interested party"...some events have rank/age restrictions. These may be chosen prior to going to camp and include things such as: Turnip Top Trek: a two-county tour by mountain bike including stops at historic sites and a stop where scouts experience the Wisdom of the famed Hogel Hills. Sack lunch provided by mess hall. Pioneer Trails: A two-day, one-night cooking/camping skills overnight away from the troop campsite. It includes doing large pioneering projects. Briley Creek Trap and Skeet: nuff said. Hot food provided. Mountain Man Villiage: black powder shooting, flint and steel, blacksmithing. Hot food provided. Indian Villiage: Range and action archery, hawk throwing, Hot food provided. Paddles: A canoe trip across the lake to Cedar Bluff, climb Devil's staircase, overnight under the stars. Scouts cook - food and equip provided by mess hall. In addition to the Ranger program, there is an amazing COPE facility, a new rockclimbing wall, scuba diving, cave exploration, hikes to the general store in Iconium, MO for those fabulous peach floats, volleyball, basketball (brand new three court sheltered facility with walk-in fireplace) and lots of hiking. You can draw either sack lunches or food to be cooked from the mess hall with 24 hours notice if you just want to "take a hike". Bartle is a nine-day camp. The Mic-O-Say honor camper program also has at least three evening events and there are three other campwide campfire programs. Hope this helps.
