Sure! A mobile / rainbow maker... Just take some fishing, cut it into three somewhat equal lenghts (however long you like or have cds for) and attach a couple of those heavy kind of sinkers to the bottom of each (this will hold the cds from flying around). Then tie a washer or whatever every 8 inches or so adding a CD on after the washer (this will hold the cd in place). Tie the top of each line to a hanger or whatever and hang them in your window. And walaa- you have a beutiful rainbow maker when the Sun shines :) For A Better Future Through Scouting, cjm (aka Chris J. Don't know if it's a "craft," but I'm saving the discs to make a giant solar cooker -- sort of a relector fresnel lens, with each disc angled to concentrate on a pot. Really, it's a stunt, since the laser-engraved pits on the CD-ROM's tend to scatter the light and thus waste part of the solar energy. -- YIS Steve on Cattail Creek sgtyler@erols.com From <@tcuavm.is.tcu.edu:owner-scouts-l@TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU> Fri Jan 30 10:34:31 1998 Return-Path: <@tcuavm.is.tcu.edu:owner-scouts-l@TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU> Received: from server1.capaccess.org (server1.CapAccess.org [207.91.115.5]) by cap1.CapAccess.org (8.6.12/8.6.10) with ESMTP id KAA12285; Fri, 30 Jan 1998 10:34:31 -0500 Received: from tcuavm.is.tcu.edu (TCUAVM.IS.TCU.EDU [138.237.128.148]) by server1.capaccess.org (AIX4.2/UCB 8.7/8.7) with SMTP id KAA14564; Fri, 30 Jan 1998 10:27:13 -0500 (EST) Received: from TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU by tcuavm.is.tcu.edu (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) with BSMTP id 5977; Fri, 30 Jan 98 09:27:01 CDT Received: from TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU (NJE origin LISTSERV@TCUBVM) by TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU (LMail V1.2a/1.8a) with BSMTP id 0165; Fri, 30 Jan 1998 09:27:51 -0500 Received: from TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU by TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU (LISTSERV release 1.8b) with NJE id 9636 for SCOUTS-L@TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU; Fri, 30 Jan 1998 09:26:53 -0500 Received: from TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU (NJE origin LISTSERV@TCUBVM) by TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU (LMail V1.2a/1.8a) with BSMTP id 9634; Fri, 30 Jan 1998 08:27:33 -0500 Approved-By: EIDSON@TCUBVM Received: from TCUBVM (NJE origin SMTP@TCUBVM) by TCUBVM.IS.TCU.EDU (LMail V1.2a/1.8a) with BSMTP id 7832; Thu, 29 Jan 1998 20:47:27 -0500 Received: from dc by tcubvm.is.tcu.edu (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) with TCP; Thu, 29 Jan 98 20:47:20 CDT Received: from dc.jones.com by dc (SMI-8.6/SMI-SVR4) id VAA12539; Thu, 29 Jan 1998 21:41:26 -0500 X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 (Macintosh; I; PPC) MIME-Version: 1.0 References: <3.0.16.19980130124835.29bf68f2@dove.net.au> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-ID: <34D13F70.84FBA9D9@dc.jones.com> Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 21:48:23 -0500 Reply-To: Dave Pragel Sender: Scouts-L Youth Group List From: Dave Pragel Subject: Re: CD ROM Discs To: Multiple recipients of list SCOUTS-L Status: O X-Status: I get a lot of these from vendors with their current year product catalog on them. And if you wish to get labor-intensive, you can use curling ribbon threaded through a Christmas ball/bulb and back through the hole in the CD as hangers. Or if you're dealing with the Tinker-Toy set, use a TT wheel as the "holder". Or, actually, connect the TTs to form a tripod and suspend the CD from it ... Here's some information that you can use: This comes to me from the December 1996 issue of _PC_World_ magazine, page 300, in the Answer Line Column by Scott Spanbauer. Someone had asked the same question. I've edited the amusing commentary out to just the details: "...Ordinary CD-ROMS contain a layer of Aluminum, CD-recordable discs have a layer of gold, and both disc types consist primarily of polycarbonate plastic that can be turned into other plastic products. "This doesn't mean that you'll get paid for your surplus CDs or even get reimbursed for the shipping costs, but you'll be doing your part to reduce the burden on Mother Earth by recycling. "GreenDisk in Preston, WA takes your CD's, floppies, and magnetic tapes and recycles the materials -- the company even sells floppy disks. GreenDisk also runs a corporate software recycling program that takes complete software packages and recycles 99.5 percent of the material, including paper, cardboard, plastics, and distribution media. Each corporation receives a letter certifying that the software package has been destroyed in accordance with the terms of the license. "Digital Audio Disc in Terre Haute, Indiana, takes your old CDs and even the plastic jewel cases they came in. The company asks only that you remove any cardboard or paper from the case. If you live closer to Indianapolis, you can ship your unwanted discs to Plastic Recycling, which also recycles discs and cases. "To learn more about CD, floppy disk, and other computer related recycling, check Evergreen Industries's Internet Consumer Recycling Guide page (http://www.best.com/~dillon/recycle/) and click the Guide to hard- to-recycle materials link. In addition to listing disk recycling resources, the guide suggests cutting CD's that contain sensitive data with tin shears before recycling, to render them unreadable. Pennsylvania, Indianapolis, IN 46625" Now for my experience with this: The company I work for has a CD Product that we used to update semi-annually, rendering all previous CD's obsolete. I took a stack of our old CDs, the AOL/MSN CD's I collected, and some CD-R's that we didn't need any more, and sent them off to be recycled. I had about 150 CDs that I sent, although it may get expensive to send smaller batches, and it may take a while to collect enough to make it worthwhile to send them off (in the 7 months since then, I've only collect 11 CDs from outside that I am recycling. I have less than that in old/bad CR-R's). If you are concerned about the data on the CDs, break them, although I found that tin snips will break more than cut the CDs, resulting in small pieces occasionally flying around. Use safety glasses and do it somewhere that you can clean up easily. The next batch I will try my Sears Craftsman HandiCut to see if that will make a cleaner cut. I have not checked any of the URL's in the article. Yours in Scouting, Scott A. What to do with all those "useless" CD ROMS? In the late 70's & early 80's I served as a Cubmaster. I was always on the lookout for any "useless" items, in quantity. When the time came around for a "Genius Kit" Pack Meeting, I had plenty of stuff to put in the bags for each Cub. We had to make sure that each bag had an identical quantiy of each item, whatever it was. The answer then is: let the Cub Scouts figure out what to do with them! The Cubs always seemed to come up with something, and no two constructions were identical.
