What things do you like about this leader? What does he/she do that really makes them a good leader? >> I think PATIENCE is essential. Kids can be exasperating and patience is necessary to keep the Scout leader from becoming just another bossy adult - "like my parents and teachers". I think patience is the thirteenth point of the Scout Law (for Scouters). Planning is important. A good leader has a plan. They don't just "wing it" time and time again. Planning takes time. Maybe that's why we have so many hard-working retired Scouters whose uniforms don't fit as well as those young Soldiers at the National Jamboree. I'm looking forward to retirement when I will have more time to do the fun stuff - and I don't mean golf or the lawn. Commitment to the program is essential. And having friendly supportive relationships with other Scouters who can get you over the humps and encourage you when you think you are getting burned out is important. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I guess leadership qualities are different from leadership skills. For leadership skills Wood Badge teaches 11 by precept, example, and application. WB was the best training I have ever had in any subject, by any organization, anywhere, anytime. (And I have been in the US Armed Forces since 1960 and have received alot of training) You readers of this list who have not been to Wood Badge ought to seriously think about doing so. It was not only good training, but lots of fun! (Ask Jon, he was there.) YinS, Charlie Morrison Fort Benning (GA) District MC Troop 27 SA (New Scouts) NE-IV-90 Fox morrisonch@aol.com
