One of the professionals at my council just sent information to me on a BSA Award called The Spirt of the Eagle Award. This is an honorary posthumous special recognition for a registered youth member who has lost his/her life in an accident or through illness. The award is bestowed by the National Court of Honor as part of the celebration of the life of the young person. The intention is also to help heal and comfort the youth member's family. The award guidelines are: 1. The recipient must have been a registered youth member under 21 years of age at the time of his/her death. 2. The unit committee must submit an application for the award within six months of the youth member's death. (Note: I have been told that this is not a 'hard and fast' rule and that our troop may submit an application to honor one of our Scouts who died January 3, 1996). 3. the unit committee must request the approval of the local council. The Spirit of the Eagle Award application, No. 92-108 (1998 printing) is available through local council service centers. YiS, -- Calvin H.
